Kidney disease afflicts 1 out of every 7 U.S. adults (~ 30 million people,) and 1 in 3 U.S. adults are at risk for kidney disease. Most people (96% early kidney disease stages 1/2 and 48% late stage 4) are not even aware of having kidney disease. Early diagnosis leads to improved long-term outcomes. Risk factors include high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and a family history of kidney disease.
Hypertension
High blood pressures is a common and dangerous condition of which the pressure in your blood vessels is higher than it should be. Hypertension afflicts 1 of 3 U.S. adults (~75 million people). In fact, 7 out of every 10 people having their first heart attack and 8 out of every 10 people having their first stroke have high blood pressure. Kidney disease is also a major risk factor for high blood pressure. 1 in every 5 U.S. adults with high blood pressure do not know that they have it.
Kidney Transplantation
Kidney transplantation provides a life saving organ to a person without the use of their own kidneys. Kidney donation is currently referred to as giving the gift of life.
